Unfortunately this
turned out to be a short trip. Everything was
going well until Friday evening when we rolled
out from our campsite up to the main road on our
way to Grumpy Bears for dinner. Larry pulled me
over to tell me it looked like my rear tire was
low. I thought the bike was handling a little
strange. I rode the bike back to camp and then
rode with Larry on the Fat Boy up to Grumpys to
call Rich (no cell phone service up here) who was
coming up in the morning to ask him if he could
pick up a bottle of fix-a-flat. No problem. When
we got back to camp after dinner we noticed there
was a big rip in the tread and the valve stem was
completely sheared off! Big problem. I must have
a hit rock hiding somewhere along the dirt road
just right. It was too late to call Rich back so
in the morning I called Marie and asked her to
pick up the bike ramp from my friend's shop (turns
out he had loaned it another shop) and drive up
in the truck to get me. While waiting for Marie
to make the 2 hour drive up Rich arrived with the
fix-a-flat but of course it would be useless.
Since Larry and I were sharing my tent because he
didn't have enough room for one on his Fatboy my
leaving early left him homeless so everybody just
decided to go home a day early. Poor Rich made
the trip for nothing... other than some break-in
miles. Jeff took the opportunity to ride home
over Sherman Pass which he had never done before.
He said he enjoyed it so I guess all was not lost.
Oh well... better luck next year.
